In Chicago, a man by the name of Lou Fushanis owned more than 600 properties in the mid 1900’s. A lot of these properties were located in the North Lawndale area. He was profiting and benefitting while inhabitants in these areas were still poor living in deprived housing conditions (Brown, 1991). After redlining was prohibited, there wasn’t much done to reverse housing situations. They remained the same and today we can see the results because we live it. We inhabit the communities that were once victims and not to mention still are. It is important to think globally and act locally. We may not be able to do much on a global level because if we want to improve the world globally, one needs to start locally. Redlining no longer exist in the form that it did. However, there are many issues uprooted from redlining that we can focus on today. One can help raise awareness on ongoing issues in communities.
There are not many people who know about redlining and how it affects our community dozens of years later. When redlining was an issue, the Citizens Action Group created anti-redlining pamphlets to raise awareness on the problem. Creating simple pamphlets to raise awareness on things such as segregation and discrimination is a way to grab attention. They also created a “greenlining” strategy which was the act of community members depositing savings in banks that would only pledge to reinvest funds in urban communities (Dean, 1990).This greenlining strategy was a form to overturn redlining in order for redlined communities to benefit from banks that agreed to reinvest those funds in these communities. It is not only important to know present day issues, but it is vital and crucial to know historical events in order to gain a deeper understanding of today’s issues. As George Santayana stated once, “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.” It is important to have historical knowledge on the past not to say that one will repeat history, but more importantly to recognize when history is being repeated in a negative way.
